Superfoods in Body Care Products | Watermelon Seed Oil

Who knew watermelon was good for your skin. It was always just a yummy summer treat that I loved as a child. It cooled you down and stopped your immediate thirst, because of all the water it contained. Now I find out that it's filled with phytochemicals (chemical compounds that occur naturally in plants; such as beta-carotene, etc.) It's a Super Food and its nutritive properties benefit the skin naturally.

Watermelon is a hydrating potent antioxidant that's a dense source of Vitamin C and beta-carotene. Vitamin C and beta-carotene neutralize damaging molecules so that we can defy age naturally. These powerful antioxidants are the natural antidote to aging and disease causing free radicals.

As we all know, hydration is the secret to vibrant healthy youthful looking skin.

Now how do we come by the watermelon seed oil?

Watermelon seed oil is also known as ootanga oil and kalahari oil. Africa is believed to be the place of origin of the watermelon. Historians trace its origins to the Kalahari Desert of Africa and hence the name Kalahari.

The seeds are dried and cold pressed to extract the beneficial oil. Watermelon seed oil contains high amounts of unsaturated fatty acids with linoleic and oleic acids.  The oil is light, easily absorbed and does not clog pores and helps the body naturally eliminate toxins through the skin. The oil is good for balancing oil production while being restorative and nourishing.  Because of its lightness, it can be used on oily skin and because of its richness in essential fatty acids, aids in restoring the elasticity in mature skin.

As always, be well
